Lime To Take First E-Scooter Ride In Japan As Part Of Fukuoka Smart EAST Project

Spotlight, News | August 27, 2019

It’s been called the most innovative city in Japan.

Between its architectural marvels, well-developed transit infrastructure, startup-friendly business climate and status as the country’s fastest-growing metropolis, Fukuoka is quickly becoming Japan’s answer to Silicon Valley.

And now, thanks to a newly-developed Smart EAST project, the city on Hakata Bay is set to double down on that reputation by hosting the first Lime electric scooter ride in Japan.

On Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8, Lime will be holding a test ride event alongside fellow project sponsors Digital Garage Co. and KDDI Corporation. The demonstration aims to introduce electric scooters as a safe, convenient and sustainable alternative to first and last mile car trips in Fukuoka.

New riders will have the opportunity to test Lime’s Gen 3 scooters, complete with 10” wheels, mountain bike-inspired suspension and an LED front display.

“We’re thrilled to be working with the Smart EAST project to bring our electric scooters to Japan for the very first time,” said Mitchell Price, Lime’s GR and Policy lead in Asia Pacific. “Fukuoka is a city focused on the future, and with Lime electric scooters riders will be able to unlock sustainable urban mobility like never before.”

The Smart EAST project has set out a goal to “create a model city with comfortable, high quality lifestyle options and intelligent use of urban space through the introduction of cutting-edge technological innovation.” By pairing innovative thinkers with sustainable, tech-forward practices, city leaders hope to transform Fukuoka into the largest smart city in Japan.

Today’s announcement comes shortly after another Asia Pacific city, Christchurch, New Zealand, celebrated its 1 millionth electric scooter ride.
